From Zoque Jungle to San Cristobal

Monday, August 10, 2009Hola, from San Cristobal, Mexico! This morning we left the Zoque jungle early, and had to bid goodbye to the people who so kindly opened up their houses to us. Over the past four days we’ve gotten to know them quite well, and it was sad to leave them. We spent most of the day traveling, as we left the jungle and headed here to stay with the Terrell family.5-the-canyon-walls-were-thousands-of-feet-highAfter driving around curve after curve (and I assure you, there are a ton of them in these mountains), the team was dropped off for a boat ride, which took us through a beautiful canyon that can’t really compare to anything we’ve ever seen outside of pictures in the National Geographic Magazine. The mountains were breathtaking, and made us realize once again what a wonderful world God has created. The boat dropped us off in Chiapa De Corzo, where we met back up with Nathan and Steven, who had driven the cars over. It was getting pretty late and we were all starved, so we stopped at a restaurant to grab some food before hitting the road once again.By late afternoon we had finally made it to the Terrell house. The first thing to hit us as we stepped out of the car was gloriously cool mountain air. We saw the beds we get to sleep in tonight, and there’s even a shower!! With hot water!!!! We were only in the jungle for four days, but in that time we never got to take a shower and we all were in major need of one. A bath with a bucket just doesn't quite cut it.One of the things we’ve learned since we’ve gotten here is that we definitely don’t need all that we have, but that we should be so thankful that we do have it. I never dreamed I’d be so excited about a bed, yet I am. We take for granted a nice clean shower, because it’s always there, but when it’s not you suddenly realize how blessed you were to have it.Tomorrow is another big day, as we’re headed off to an orphanage, so ‘till next time,~Katie, Team Chiapas6-woohoo-getting-sunburned-tooWoohoo!! Cool boat ride... and a sunburn to go with it.4-daisy-one-of-the-girls-from-the-village-went-with-us-on-the-boat-ride-it-was-so-much-fun-to-watch-her-eyes-light-upDaisy, one of the girls from the Zoque village, was traveling with us to San Cristobal. It was so much fun taking her with us on the boat ride and watching her eyes light up!
