Shantytown and CI

Wednesday, August 8. This morning we got to visit a shanty town area. We taught a song, told Bible stories, played soccer, blew up balloons, and gave out candy and a meal. We had an awesome time being there, but it is hard to believe that living here is even possible. The things that those people have to put up with on a daily basis is staggering. What hit me the hardest was that so many of the kids needed medical attention, but they probably won’t receive it. It was heartrending.

On the more cheerful side, the sun came out today, which is a novelty in Peru. To our great joy we were allowed to spend the afternoon soaking up the sunshine on the beach! We all kicked off our shoes and went running in the waves. (Some of us a little further than others.) It was great fun and we enjoyed just relaxing.

The beach!

Next it was off for another night of the kids’ program. The children were pretty wild this evening. The have really changed since the first night. On Monday, we could hardly get them to do anything because they were so reserved. On Tuesday they started to have fun and became more responsive. Tonight the plug was pulled and Peruvian energy spilled out all over. The night went well, though, and the kids seemed to really love it.

The team is doing well. We are all a bit tired, but in our weakness God is strong.
